Novo Aether: Vetus Caelum
Technology in most of the galaxy has progressed to the point where crude cybernetic attachment are no longer needed. Limbs can be regrown and organic circuitry is widespread. Nanonics are beginning to spread past the Higher culture, allowing the average citizen of an Inner or Outer Sphere world to obtain the powerful and complex enrichments. At the very least, most of the galaxy has access to synthetic biotech augmentations. However some have ignored the shunning of visible cybernetics and replace or modify their bodies with powerful cybernetic attachments. These individuals do not care about the physical standards that exist in most of the Covenant Earth. Instead they seek to enhance and alter the human form with machinery instead of genetic rewriting or nanonic enrichments, sometimes in addition to. Using bitek technology, these individuals became twisted scarecrows of utility and many left their original forms behind. Some have bizarre appearances as they add on more and more augmentations as funds become available. A bitektroph can be an imposing figure.
Originally cybernetic augmentation arose from the need to handle the harsh environment of space. Technicians in freefall needed to be able to handle working on complex machines and found limitations in the human body. The better you were able to handle complex work, the more jobs and contracts you lined up with corporate star carriers and independent freelancers. Thus metals arms were added, muscles boosted, skin replaced with artificial synthetic coverings. They became twisted metal scarecrows fluttering around ships with multiple limbs, filtered lungs and blood replaced by expensive artificial fluids. The more they became augmented, the more efficient and the more jobs they lined up with better pay. A community of tough independent augmented cyborgs arose in the world of spacers. Soon displaced combat veterans were turning to the same practice as mercenary work ballooned in the Frontier and in the Wild Space.
Bitektroph exist on the fringes of society and are more common in the Outer Sphere or fringe. Most of humanity strives for the ideal body image of a fit mid-twenties human and obtain it via rejuvenation therapy or v-writing to slow or reverse aging. In Prime Collective culture, external cybernetic improvements are not as much of social faux pa but cybernetic enhancements are still rare. A limitless variety of cybernetic enhancements are available. Some bitektroph get enhancements for cosmetic reasons while the majority do so for utility. Extra limbs, cybernetic wings, weapon emplacements, heavy armoring and more are fairly common. A bitektroph will draw attention and some stares but often are welcome as mercenaries or other dangerous line of work where toughened utility is prized. Bitektroph usually have some experience at modifying their own selves and can often bounce back from injury quickly by swapping out parts. A biktektroph no longer needs external nutrition to sustain itself but rather manufacturers it’s own energy via a variety of means (solar, energy cells, biochemical reactions, nuclear powerplants).
